East Coast IOOS Regional Associations Water Quallity Workshop

When: January 25-26, 2010

Where: Baltimore, Maryland. Exact location to be announce soon.

Workshop Summary: The purpose of the workshop is to explore integrated science-based solutions for four major water-quality issues affecting 3 East Coast IOOS regions (NERACOOS, MACOORA, and SECOORA), including (1) dissolved oxygen depletion (hypoxia), (2) harmful algal blooms, (3) nutrient enrichment (eutrophication), and (4) floatables. This two-day workshop will provide an ideal forum for interactive discussions among scientists, managers, and policy makers, and lead to short- and long-term actions, priorities, and resource requirements within the three regions, with transferability across the Nation. Specifically, the workshop will highlight within each of the three IOOS regions: Success stories on how science—including monitoring, assessments, and analysis tools—are brought together with policy and management decisions to improve water quality within watersheds, estuaries, near shore environments, and the coasts. Current scientific and monitoring capabilities, assessment and decision-making tools, observational assets, and data infrastructure—along with associated opportunities, challenges, and gaps in addressing management and policy issues. Objectives and issues addressed by current monitoring programs including sampling designs (such as fixed, targeted, probabilistic, continuous, real-time, event based, satellite reconnaissance, and Lagrangian), and the opportunities and challenges in the integration of diverse data from multiple sources and designs.

Outcome: A meeting summary of actions, priorities, and resource requirements, as well as web-based presentations will be available at the biennial conference of the National Water Quality Monitoring Council in Denver, Colorado on April 25th to 29th, 2010.

Attendees: This workshop is designed for scientists, managers, and policy makers associated with the East Coast IOOS Regional Associations (MACOORA /SECOORA/ NERACOOS), including Federal, State, and regional governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, industry, universities, and the private sector. Participation is by invitation through your respective IOOS Regional Association. The workshop will be limited to 60 persons.
